Traumatic brain injury impacts ~2% of the population and frequently causes disabilities in short-term memory. A recent study shows that targeted electrical stimulation in patients with traumatic brain injury led to an average 19% boost in recalling words. The study was led by University of Pennsylvania psychology professor Michael Jacob Kahana. His team of neuroscientists studied traumatic brain injury patients with implanted electrodes, analyzed neural data as patients studied words, and used machine learning algorithms to predict momentary memory lapses.
