Paralyzed woman speaks using a digital avatar

Researchers have developed an implantable AI-powered device that, for the first time, translates brain signals into modulated speech and facial expressions. As a result, Ann (a woman who lost the ability to speak due to a stroke) was able to speak and convey emotion using a talking digital avatar.

The pioneering research work is lead by UCSF neurosurgeon Edward Chang as a result of the work of UC Berkeley’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences researchers, Gopala Anumanchipalli, and Kaylo Littlejohn. The pioneering work is described in a study published in the prestigious journal Nature.
